1.  BreachJack

My favorite party in Miami during Miami Music Week this year was hands down the Dirtybird BBQ. First of all, if you want a chill party with crazy star power hit it up. This song was the only song that was played by both Eats Everything & Catz ‘n Dogz and Justin Martin & Claude VonStroke (both were b2b sets). This just goes to show how crazy this song is. This has already been called the song of the summer in deep house circles, and I wholeheartedly believe it will be. If you’re going to be at a deep house show in the coming months, be prepared to hear this song.

2.  Gent & JawnsHoller

Before I get into the song itself, I have to say Billy the Gent is probably my favorite DJ name ever.  That being said, I love the direction that moombahton is taking. It’s starting to get away from the strict reggaeton vibe started by Dave Nada and taking more of a full sound. I like Gent & Jawns‘s work (Vibrate was awesome too) and the sound they are pushing.

3.  Jay FayDibby Dibby

I am rolling out another moombahton track. Again this is more of the developed song that Gent & Jawns are using right now. This one is not quite as heavy as Holler, but I would argue it’s a bit more fun. This is definitely a bouncy jam and kind of groovy too. Definitely something new, definitely something cool.

4.  ZomboyHere To Stay (Sikdope Remix)

Getting away from moombah into some bouncy dubstep. I’m generally not a huge fan of brostep but it does sound so good when sped up. Sikdope just has fun with this remix and you can tell.

5.  FarkasTribal Dance

Staying with the quick and energetic dubstep. Keeping it fun, keeping it bouncy.

Some songs don’t blow you away on the first listen. Instead it takes a few good listens for them to be truly amazing. These songs are the ones that you find yourself singing all day long.  In this new section, I have picked the one song from the week before that I could not get out of my head all week.  Introuducing…

Sleeper of the Week

Close feat. Charlene Soraia & Scuba Beam Me Up

Great, great deep house song. After I heard this it was literally stuck in my head all day, and I
had to go home and listen to it 3 times in a row. Scuba is a big name in the scene and it’s
easy to see why. Listen to it once, and you just might end up listening to it on repeat for the rest
of the day.

Moose Track Mondays

1.  Major Lazer feat. The PartysquadOriginal Don (The Partysquad & Punish Smash Em Remix)

I am usually not a fan of Original Don remixes. I love the hardstyle flavor of the original, and frankly most remixes leave me disappointed (especially that freaking trap remix). This one starts out much the same way as other remixes with a trapesque build up before it drops you into some … JUNGLE? Are you kidding me? Hands down my favorite remix. The jungle seems to come completely out of nowhere. Well played guys.

2.  Major LazerHold the Line

Goin heavy on the Major Lazer this week. This is by no means a new song, but actually one I’ve liked for a while just never knew the name. This reminds me of vintage Major Lazer back when they were just Diplo’s side act. There are so many things in this song that just highlight how goofy they used to be, horse neighs and all. An infectious, silly jam from the people that do that best.

3.  DJ ZincNexx

From the one and only DJ Zinc, a vintage house jam. He has incredible range and can make
house records like nobody else. This is a relatively simple song but manages to give off a sound
that was around before the term “House Music” became a part of popular culture. DJ Zinc is
amazing and that is all.

4.  Zeds Dead feat. Omar LinxCowboy (Torro Torro Remix)

Usually I’m not a huge fan of electro. But this song is just a really cool sounding combination of songs. I’m not a huge fan of the build up, but the drop is so good that I’ll ignore it. Torro Torro took an already great heavy dubstep song and made it a tad lighter and more upbeat. Really liking the finished product.  And apparently I’m not the only one, because at least one artist dropped this at Ultra this year.

5.  Surkin feat. CanblasterStronger

I’m not exactly sure if this is considered dubstep or some variation of a four on the floor genre. Either way it’s a cool sound that I’m really digging. Cool lighter dubstep(?) track.

1.  Disonata & Krew“AFO” (Sub Antix Remix)

Hey Everyone, back from a short hiatus.  We’re going in right from the get-go.  This week we’re starting with some hard, foot stomping beats.  I loved this one the first time I heard it.  It’s aggressive, futuristic, and fast paced.  Try and keep up.

2.  Diplo“Express Yourself” (Gent & Jawns Remix)

Usually, I shy away from remixes of songs that I love.  And let me tell you I rocked the original by Diplo hard.  I usually find that many remixes just have small tweaks that don’t do the original justice.  This song is completely different.  Until I saw the name of this track I did not know it was a remix.  It sounds very original and takes the sounds Diplo made in a whole new direction.  Very cool take on a great song.

3.  Wildchild “Renegade Master” (Fatboy Slim Old Skool Mix)

This song needs little introduction.  Fatboy Slim has proven time and time again to be one of the greatest DJ’s in the world, regardless of what decade you’re talking about.  His productions are timeless; his shows are incredible.  Listen and enjoy to this one because frankly it doesn’t get much better than this.

4.  Birdy Nam Nam“Defiant Order”

This fearsome foursome produces another banger.  Some might even say it sounds a bit like another French electro group (*cough Daft Punk *cough).  This is just some plain old grimy electro.  Just shows that they don’t need Skrillex remixing their stuff to be recognized.  They are fine pumping out this dark noise by themselves.

5.  Just Blaze“Behold” (Exhibit J)

When I say the name Just Blaze a lot of sounds pop into my head.  His productions were the soundtrack to the early years of Jay-Z and Eminem’s last album.  But when you press play on Behold, you hear a completely different sound, one reminiscent of deep house in the 90’s.  It’s astonishing how good this song is considering this is Just Blaze’s first release of a track that is anything besides hip-hop.  This goes to show, that a great producer can use his craft to make anything sound great.  Wow, Just Blaze, well done.

Mix

Essential Mix – Mat Zo 2/9/2013

I will preface this by saying that I am not a huge fan of trance.  I like a lot of music but trance is not my thing.  I fully expected to not be impressed by this mix.  And then Mat Zo made me a believer.  GOD DAMN he can throw down. Mat Zo does variety.  This is literally one of the most dynamic Essential Mixes I have ever heard.  Put this one on and get ready for a ride, because he will surprise you.

1) Sultan & Ned Shepard & NERVO feat. Omarion“Army” (Original Mix)

I had the pleasure of seeing Nervo in New Orleans the other weekend and it was a great time. They announced that this was their newest track and I’ve been listening to it ever since. Generally speaking, I’m not a huge fan of artist crossovers, this case being Omarion, but that’s just become part of the world we live in.

2) W&W & Ummet Ozcan“The Code” (Original Mix)

This song is massive. The drop is killer and I cant wait to hear it get played out at Ultra.

3) Kavinsky“ProtoVision” (Boys Noize Remix)

Nobody does it better than Boys Noize. Enough said.

4) Ilan BluestoneSinai (Original Mix)

I’ve been finding a lot of songs similar to this through Anjuna. Beautiful song.

5) Flux PavilionStarlight (Original Mix)

Flux Pavilion continuously releases awesome, unique tracks. This one is no different. Solid vocals and signature Flux bass.

Eric Prydz is a god among men. The word he puts out continually is mind-numbingly fantastic. His previous Essential Mix from the wonderful Creamfields is the piece of music that made me appreciate Eric Prydz. Up until then I just appreciated his productions from time to time. This Essential Mix not only holds up against his previous work, but surpasses it.

The first portion of this mix is a seamless slow rise with that classic Eric Prydz groove. I don’t think anyone can fight getting sucked into the feel good funk that he provides. His sets are so consistently appealing to almost everybody. I have heard so few complaints about anything he has done. The best parts of his sets, in my opinion, are when he takes you deeper and darker. About halfway through the set, the vibe takes a turn from mellow and groovy to super intense. Prydz‘s greatest strength is ability to manipulate ambiance and mood. This Essential Mix is just him flexing his muscles hard.

Essential Mix of the Week – Beardyman

Whatup everybody?  Since the head honcho covered for me, I’m bringing my eclectic to taste to Wednesday.  I promise you, this is unlike any Essential Mix you’ve ever heard.  Beardyman is what one would call an Electronic Music Beatboxer.  He creates every thing on the fly with FX equipment and his own voice.  It’s astounding.  Two things are gonna jump out at you right off the bat. First, this is not an all EDM Essential Mix.  Hell he starts off with the original Express Yourself, not that new Diplo track. And two, his voice is amazing.  If you don’t get that right away, you will be by the time he starts crooning Cee-Lo Green.  I’m gonna give you an extra youtube clip, because in order to fully appreciate his skills you have to see him work.  Seriously though, this guy is bonkers.  Very cool and very, very different Essential Mix to rock to.

Moose Track Mondays 2/4

1.  Tryptich“Eucalyptus”

After taking a week hiatus, I had to come out firing.  This downtempo masterpiece is straight fire.  No but seriously, this song is bumpin, a straight head noddin jam.  I’ve never heard of Tryptich, and frankly I don’t even remember who played this.  All you need to know is it’s some of that good stuff.

2.  S. Chu“Oh My” (feat. Mila Falls)

This song is a more usual take on slower tempo music, another gem from the Annie Mac show.  In recent weeks I’ve been getting more into deep house and garage.  Very cool tune with an awesome vocal.

3.  The Jackson 5 “Dancing Machine” (Henrik Shwarz Remix)

To put it simply there’s a reason songs from The Jackson 5 are timeless.  It doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s hard not to sing along when “I Want You Back” is playing.  Same goes for this song.  Henrik Shwarz’s remix keeps the grooviness and catchiness of the original intact while adding an awesome deep house back.  I’m warning you right now, you’ll be singing this song for the rest of the night.

4.  London Elektricity“Remember the Future”

Ok, we’ve had enough deep house, let’s get back to some quicker stuff.  I’ve only recently heard of London Elektricity, which is a shame because apparently they’re legends (founders of Hospital Records).  This one is a really fun, feel good track.  I can’t help but smile while listening to it.  Nothing like some feel good drum and bass to lighten your mood.

5.  Zeds Dead“Rave”

We’re gonna finish off this week with some breaks.  While Zeds Dead may not be good dj’s (seriously they’re horrendous), they are fantastic producers.  They always explore new territory with their sounds.  They’ve damn near perfected their dubstep, they’ve flexed they’re muscles at drum and bass, now they’re throwing some breaks into the mix.  This song is a great mix of old and new, with a definitive Zeds Dead sound over the breaks.  It’s always cool to see what they can come up with, and they don’t disappoint here.

Mix of the Week

Essential Mix 1/19/2013 – George Fitzgerald

BBC Radio 1 has been doing their Future Stars Essential Mixes.  Each week a different Radio 1 host chooses someone as their Future Star of 2013.  This was Heidi’s pick.  George Fitzgerald is a young deep house dj.  Very cool, very chill mix.  Unfortunately most of the songs in here you can’t find online (trust me, I tried).  So all there is for you to do is sit back and enjoy.  Plus, he’s going to be at UMF the weekend I’m going, so I’m pumped I get to see him live.  That’s it for me this week.  Let me know what you think.

Ok kids, this week its Derek taking over for Moose. Moose isn’t feeling too well so I took over his picks this time around. This is all his music, I’m just giving you guys the words to match the sounds. I hope he did well this week.

1. K.W. Griff“Bring in the Katz” (feat. Porkchop)

Who the hell is Porkchop, and why is his voice so amazing. Of course Moose would throw down some Baltimore club. This track is straight fire, just non-stop hilarity. Lil’ Jon should have taken this direction. It would have lead to a whole lot more entertaining music.

2. Elliphant“Down On Life”

This female powerhouse of a producer breaking into our world with this massive tune. “Down On Life” is just a nice piece of easy going dubstep drawing from that dancehall sound that has been sweeping the UK. Her other tracks are much more insane but I like the flow this one has. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this chick is a force to watch out for in the future.

3. DJ Zinc - “Only For Tonight” (feat. Sasha Keable)

I had never heard of any of these artist up until this track and I am losing it. There is definitely a theme to Moose’s picks this week. They all seem to have a little bit of that Caribbean or dancehall influence. I can get behind this track full force. I am a huge fan of that standard kick and the guiding mids. Sasha‘s voice is a fantastic compliment to the instrumentals.

4. Jus Now“Tun Up”

I was only able to find a rip of this one. Following the theme of Caribbean influences this track annihilates the dance floor. Very slow track, with an unexpectedly dark and nasty vibe. Going to drive all the kids bonkers.

5. DJ Fresh“Hot Right Now” (feat. Rita Ora)

Moose had a chance to show me this nasty original while we were pre-gaming. I cannot wait to see some nice DJ Fresh in Miami with him. Rita Ora has been making really huge moves in the Uk and these vocals are her flexing mad muscle. This is some nice little drumstep for you to get moving. Moose did not disappoint this week.

Sorry for the lack of a mix to follow up this post, but I think these picks are mind numbing. Enjoy the ear candy.

1) DJ Chuckie & Junxter Jack“Make Some Noise” (Laidback Luke Remix)

This song has been floating around since Chuckie first played it at Ultra 2012. I can’t hear much of a difference between the original and the LBL remix, but the song is a total bomb and I’ve been listening on repeat ever since I got my hands on it.

2) Depeche Mode“Enjoy The Silence” (Tom Staar & Kryder Remix)

Tom Staar & Kryder have never once disappointed me on a single collaboration. They took an absolute classic by the legendary Depeche Mode and revamped it, turning it into a mega dance floor track.

3) Andain“What It’s Like” (John Dahlback Remix)

Heard this track on George Acosta’s Lost World 431 and was blown away. When it came time to download it, I was not the least bit surprised to see John Dahlback’s name connected to it. The guy is cranking out major hits left and right and is someone who I will be absolutely sure not to miss at Ultra this year.

4) CLMD“Falling Like Angels” (Sebjak’s Rave Remix)

The only way to describe this song is big. It has a big room sound and perfect soft vocals in-between drops. I can’t wait to hear this live or play it for a crowd and see the reactions.

5) Federico Scavo“You Know” (Original Mix)

I actually heard this tune a month or two ago and knew it was fantastic. I was not in a position to download it at that moment and it fell by the wayside. As fate would have it, it popped up again and I grabbed it immediately. What’s that? Toolroom putting out another fantastic dance track? Shocker.

Feed Me is one of those artists that flies on and off my radar. His Escape From Electric Mountain EP blew my mind, and this mix is even better. As much as I despise Deadmau5, Mau5trap has an incredible knack for finding great producers. Finding both Skrillex and Feed Me is a pretty cool achievement in my opinion.

This mix blew me away. I love Feed Me‘s production style and his mixing is just as fantastic. The mix features mainly his own productions with some edits and tracks by other artists. I was very impressed with Feed Me’s use of Aphex Twin‘s “Window Licker”. Aphex Twin was one of the handful of artists that started my deep interest in electronic music. It is always nice to see his work make an appearance in a mix by a popular artist. I think that Feed Me‘s flexes his muscles hard, showing off his great control of flow. Following up my pick last week of Daft Punkft isn’t easy, but this one holds up to the task.
